TOTEMPOLE is an episodic novel written in eight sections, and one I had been looking forward to reading for a long time. Unfortunately, the last two sections disassociate from the previous six in such a jarring, Totempole book way that I ended up drifting off, and not enjoying the last pages of the book/5.

Maybe it has some special appeal to New Yorkers who have a connection to an older New York?/5(11). The book is uneven and the pervading Freudian psychoanalytic overlay becomes a bit too strong at times, especially in recounting the early childhood of Stephen, the principal character, but Totempole really does merit continuing attention as a fine novel and 4/5(1).
